Orchestrating Wireless Propagation for Internet of Things Systems with Intelligent Reflecting Surfaces
6th International Conference on Novel & Intelligent Digital Systems (NIDS 2026), September 23-25, 2026, Athens, Greece
ABSTRACT
Dense Internet of Things (IoT) deployments increasingly expose system-level limitations in conventional wireless design. As the number of intermittent, energy-limited devices grows, the overhead required for channel acquisition, coordination, and per-link optimization becomes disproportionate to the transmitted payload. The result is not only reduced peak performance, but also fragile coverage and persistent energy inefficiency in obstructed and interference-limited environments. Intelligent reflecting surfaces (IRS) address this challenge by making propagation partially controllable, enabling coverage and interference patterns to be shaped through environment-level actuation rather than endpoint-only adaptation. This paper adopts an environment-centric control perspective, treating channel estimation and beamforming as coupled elements of a unified propagation control loop whose objective is to preserve useful propagation structures over the period during which IRS configurations remain effective. Building on this view, we present an environment-centric architecture that integrates IRS as shared actuators within the IoT control plane and organizes propagation management into a staged pipeline of environment observation, control synthesis, and surface configuration. The pipeline is driven by context stability rather than fast fading. The paper further examines system-level trade-offs involving scalability, latency tolerance, and energy consumption, and demonstrates through representative deployment scenarios how the proposed framework maps to practical design choices in massive IoT networks.
