ABSTRACT
|
| Traffic-education activities for primary school student have to be adapted to the individual learner. This paper presents an extension to a serious game for traffic education developed in Unity, which is a transparent rule-based adaptation mechanism. The mechanism was integrated with the results of a pilot study that was conducted with the non-adaptive version of the serious game. The pilot study was conducted with 23 students from second grade of a primary school in Athens. All the students in the study were pre-tested and 20 of the students were also post-tested. The mean gain scores of the two groups of students were 4.00 and 2.89, respectively. The difference of the two gain scores was equal to 1.11 points with a 95% confidence interval of [−1.36, 3.58] and t = 0.96 and p = .353. Hedges¢ g was equal to .42. The findings of the study support the feasibility of the core game for traffic education and provide some functional evidence for the use of the adapted version of the game for traffic education. More empirical studies are needed in order to provide evidence of the educational effectiveness of the adapted version of the game for traffic education.
