Architecting Agentic AI as a Coordination Fabric for Heterogeneous Internet of Everything Systems
21st International Workshop on Smart Media Adaptation, AI & Personalization (SMAP 2026), November 19-20, 2026, Mystras, Greece
ABSTRACT
Internet of Everything (IoE) systems increasingly operate as large-scale assemblies of heterogeneous entities whose behavior is shaped less by individual intelligence and more by the coordination of decisions over time. As sensing, communication, computation, and actuation become deeply intertwined, coordination emerges as a structural limitation that constrains the autonomy, scalability, and resilience of systems. This study argues that prevailing model-centric views of artificial intelligence (AI) are insufficient to address this limitation and advances agentic coordination as a system-level alternative. Agentic AI is framed not as an application-layer capability but as a coordination fabric that organizes decisions across perception, communication, and action under heterogeneity and uncertainty. A conceptual reference architecture is presented to formalize this role, followed by an examination of the coordination design logic that emphasizes dynamic role allocation, commitment management, and adaptive decision-making. This study further reconsiders the evaluation and testbed design, highlighting the need for process-aware perspectives that capture coordination quality beyond outcome-based metrics. By positioning coordination as a first class architectural concern, this study provides a principled foundation for designing and assessing autonomous IoE systems.
