Biography
Dr. Yannis Avrithis was born in Athens, Greece in 1970. He received the Diploma degree in Electrical and Computer Engineering from the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in September 1993, and the M.Sc. degree in Communications and Signal Processing (with Distinction) from the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering of the Imperial College of Science, Technology and Medicine, University of London, UK, in October 1994. He served his military service from January 1995 to July 1996 as a Computer Programmer. In December 1995 he was accepted from the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE) of NTUA for a Ph.D thesis in the area of Digital Image Processing, entitled "Video Sequence Analysis for Annotation, Summarization and Content-Based Retrieval," that was completed in March 2001.
He is currently a senior researcher at the Image, Video and Multimedia Systems Laboratory (IVML) of NTUA, carrying out research in the area of semantic image and video analysis and coordinating R&D activities in Greek national and European projects. His research interests include spatiotemporal image / video segmentation and interpretation, knowledge-assisted multimedia analysis, content-based and semantic indexing and retrieval, video summarization, automatic and semi-automatic multimedia annotation, personalization, and multimedia databases. He has been involved in 13 European and 9 National R&D projects, and has published 1 book, 13 articles in international journals, 5 book chapters, 10 lecture notes chapters, 1 article in standards and 62 in conferences and workshops in the above areas. He has contributed to the organization of 15 international conferences and workshops, and is a reviewer in 19 conferences and 15 scientific journals. He is an IEEE member, and a member of ACM, EURASIP, the IET and the Technical Chamber of Greece.
Dr. Avrithis has long experience in the research and development of systems for audiovisual archive management, annotation, audiovisual content analysis, summarization, indexing and retrieval. As a Software Engineer at Infolab Multimedia Ltd. in 1998, he has developed a Video-on-Demand (VoD) system designed and implemented to fit the needs of hotel and hospital sector. As a Project Manager at Syntax IT, Inc. in 2001, he has served as the Coordinator of the European IST-FP5 project MIRROR, developing a distributed knowledge management system supporting physical and social interactions. He has also served as Technical Leader of the European IST-FP5 project FAETHON in IVML in 2002, developing a mediator system that offers semantic indexing and enhanced, personalized retrieval capabilities to users of heterogeneous audiovisual (a/v) archives.
In collaboration with Informatics and Telematics Institute (ITI) / Centre for Research and Technology Hellas (CERTH) in 2005, he has been the WP4 Leader of the European IST-FP6 Integrated Project aceMedia, targeting to extract meaning inherent to the content in order to automate annotation and help users create, communicate, find, consume and reuse audiovisual content. He has also been involved in the R&D Training Network MULTI-MINE, providing seminars in all areas relating to knowledge discovery and management with emphasis on multimedia, and the European IST-FP6 Network of Excellence MUSCLE, led by the European Research Consortium for Informatics and Mathematics (ERCIM) and facilitating high-level access to multimedia databases by incorporating machine learning and multimedia data mining techniques.
The work of his group in the area of semantic multimedia analysis has led to a number of European IST-FP6 projects in 2006, most in collaboration with CERTH-ITI and in the strategic objective of Knowledge and Content Technologies. These include K-Space NoE, X-Media IP, MESH IP, BOEMIE STREP, and Imagination STREP. He is also leading a number of relevant National projects.
Apart from serving as a reviewer in a number of well-known international journals and conferences, he is also very active in event organization in the area of multimedia semantics, organizing special sessions in ICANN 2006 and VIE 2006, workshops BOEMIE 2006 at EKAW 2006 and KMC 2006 at IST Event 2006, participating in SSMS 2006 and SSMS 2007 summer schools, and chairing SAMT 2006, WIAMIS 2007 and SAMT 2007 conferences.
